Reading Notes with Ease for the Earliest Beginner

Reading Notes with Ease, from Nova Book Company, is an Acrobat PDF-based e-book, directed at young users and meant to teach basic note reading skills.  It requires you to have Acrobat reader on your computer (most already do - and if not, it is easily available for free), and also Apple's Quicktime player (also available for free) to play some music clips and note sounds.

The author introduces a series of characters that are associated with each note and each of which have a name and a voice that will entertain young users.  These characters are present throughout the text and will certainly add enough flavor and fun to the task of learning notes to keep youngsters involved.

The book has five chapters titled:

  • 1 - The Piano Keyboard and Musical Alphabet
  • 2 - The Great Staff
  • 3 - The First Eleven Notes
  • 4 - The Next Six Notes
  • 5 - The Final Four Notes

The last section contains a nice Great Staff diagram that summarizes the previous five sections. It can be printed and referred to later on.  First off, the book is very nicely put together and formatted and is easy to read with bright graphics and excellent editing.   I'll give you a brief summary of the five chapters mentioned above and tell you about the "extras" included at the end of the book.  If you want to take a look at the site now, click here.

Chapter 1 introduces the well-drawn characters that are associated with the seven notes (C, D, E, F, G, A,and B), and points out to young eyes that the patterns on the keyboard can be associated with some common things they see everyday.  I'll leave the specifics for you to discover!  The approach is nicely executed and will certainly make learning notes easier for youngsters.  Each of the characters has a voice that you hear when you click on their image and note examples are given too, by way of the Quicktime sounds included in the book.  The first chapter ends after having introduced all seven chartacters with audio and visual examples of where they "live".  There's a good summary picture at the end of the chapter that ties together the introduction to the seven notes.

Chapter 2 introduces the treble and bass clefs.  The chapter is brief and introduces some terminolgy like bar lines and measures.  It really serves as a short introduction to Chapter 3 which re-introduces the characters from Chapter 1 and starts the real task of teaching how to recognize notes on a staff.

Chapter 3 starts off the real work of the book.  Each note is introduced and placed on the staff.  The graphics are professionally done and the carry over of using the characters from Chapter 1 is a great idea.  In a number of places in Chapter 3, good mnemonics are provided that can help youngsters remember what note goes where.  Eleven notes are covered: four notes on the bass clef, B, C, and D between the clefs, and E, F, G, and A on the treble clef.

Chapter 4 introduces six new notes: high and low C,  B and D on the bass clef, and then B and D on the treble clef. The chapter ends with a nice summary graphic showing the relationships between the notes on the bass and treble clefs.

Chapter 5 teaches 4 additional notes on the Great Staff, for a total of 21, from the bottom line of the bass clef to the top line of the treble clef.  The chapter wraps up with a nice printable summary chart of all the notes covered in the previous pages.  The author mentions another book of a similar nature called "Reading Ledger Line Notes with Ease", which takes the next step and teaches the notes between, above and below the bass and treble clefs.

That's a quick summary of the five chapters of the ebook.  Now for the extras!  Right after Chapter 5, you'll find a set of printable flash cards you can use to reinforce a child's knowledge of the notes presented in the book.  Instructions for printing and using the cards are included.  The next extra included in the book is a section on rythym and time signatures.  This section is little bit above the level targeted by the book itself, but is very well done and could be used by an adult to introduce the information to a child.  Following the time signature section is a set of paper and crayon games for kids (printable) that will reinforce what they've learned.  Next, a section on navigation tips for PDF documents for those unfamiliar with them - very helpful.  And lastly, the author includes an offer of a free ebook just for an email with comments and suggestions or experiences with the product.

In summary, the package provides a lot of value for the money ($14.97) and the author has done a very professional job of writing and presenting the material.   It's a great beginning for someone just starting to learn music.  Purchase is easy and download is immediate.
